The majestic oak tree, with its impressive size and its astounding beauty, reminds us of our insignificance compared to the might of nature. Not surprisingly, in Greek mythology it was the tree sacred to the king of the gods, Zeus.
“The strongest oak of the forest is not the one that is protected from the storm and hidden from the sun. It’s the one that stands in the open where it is compelled to struggle for its existence against the winds and rains and the scorching sun.” – Napoleon Hill
A true symbol of might and stamina, the oak tree is recognized as the national tree of many countries, including Serbia, Cyprus, England, Estonia, France, Germany, Moldova, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the United States, Wales, Galicia and Bulgaria. In politics, it is used as a symbol by many political parties, such as the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom, and the Democrats of the Left in Italy.
“When the oak is felled the whole forest echoes with its fall, but a hundred acorns are sown in silence by an unnoticed breeze” – Thomas Carlyle
With over 600 species, the oak tree has a wide range of habitat – it can be found in North America, South America, Asia, and Europe. The biggest number of oak species, however, can be found in North America. Oaks are evergreen trees that are widely used for their strong and hard wood. However, they are also used in the alternative medicine as it is said oak has a positive influence on the health.
When it comes to perfumery, the oak note is rather an image, a sense of the mighty tree in a green forest, a feel of the wind blowing gently in its branches, the sound of an acorn falling on the wet forest carpet of leaves and moss. Its scent is woody and earthy, hugging your senses in its warm embrace.
