Pineapples, also known as “Ananas comosus”, originate from South America (somewhere between Brazil and Paraguay). Columbus was the one who found pineapples on the island of Guadeloupe and he brought some of them to Spain. From there, the tasty pineapple made its way to the Philippines, Hawaii, Zimbabwe, and Guam (thanks to the Spanish), to Brazil and India (thanks to the Portuguese) and to the rest of Europe (thanks to the Dutch).

Nowadays, pineapples are sold all over the world with canned pineapples being less expensive than the fresh fruit. Costa Rica is responsible for the biggest production of pineapples, followed by the Philippines, Brazil, Thailand, and India.

The word pineapple (ananas) comes from the word “nanas” which means “excellent fruit”. We can’t agree more with this comparison! The English name pineapple was given to the “excellent fruit” by European explorers, who found a resemblance between pineapples and pine cones and, since the fruit was edible (and tasty), they put pine and apple together, and, voila, we have a pineapple!

Interesting facts about pineapples:

  • Pineapples are traditionally served during the Chinese New Year as they represent good luck, prosperity, good fortune and gambling luck in particular!
  • Pineapples are pretty stubborn when it comes to growing and ripening – it takes 3 years for a pineapple to start giving fruits and it only produces one fruit per year.
  • Planting your own pineapple is easy – you just have to cut off the top of a pineapple and plant it (leaves on top) in soil. The bad news is you’ll have to wait for a whole year to see the fruit of your labor…
  • Pineapples do not ripen after being harvested, so there is really no need to wait for a few days before you come back from the store with your pineapple to enjoy its taste – it won’t get any riper.
  • If you come upon an unripe pineapple, do not eat it as it can be poisonous.
  • Pineapples can affect the taste of your… bodily fluids. Even though there are other foods that claim to do the same, pineapple has the strongest effect of them all. If you are wondering what this effect is, well, it makes you taste… sweeter.
  • The enzyme Bromelain, found in pineapples, is very famous for breaking down proteins, which means you can use pineapple juice as a meat tenderizer!
