Columbus was the one who found pineapples on the island of Guadeloupe and he brought some of them to Spain. From there, the tasty pineapple made its way to the Philippines, Hawaii, Zimbabwe, and Guam (thanks to the Spanish), to Brazil and India (thanks to the Portuguese) and to the rest of Europe (thanks to the Dutch).<\/p>\n
Nowadays, pineapples are sold all over the world with canned pineapples being less expensive than the fresh fruit. Costa Rica is responsible for the biggest production of pineapples, followed by the Philippines, Brazil, Thailand, and India.<\/p>\n
The word pineapple (ananas) comes from the word \u201cnanas\u201d which means \u201cexcellent fruit\u201d. We can\u2019t agree more with this comparison! The English name pineapple was given to the \u201cexcellent fruit\u201d by European explorers, who found a resemblance between pineapples and pine cones and, since the fruit was edible (and tasty), they put pine and apple together, and, voila, we have a pineapple!<\/p>\n

- Planting your own pineapple is easy \u2013 you just have to cut off the top of a pineapple and plant it (leaves on top) in soil. The bad news is you\u2019ll have to wait for a whole year to see the fruit of your labor\u2026<\/li>\n
- Pineapples do not ripen after being harvested, so there is really no need to wait for a few days before you come back from the store with your pineapple to enjoy its taste \u2013 it won\u2019t get any riper.<\/li>\n
